چکیده

We demonstrate that the high pressure of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) can trigger the collapse of molecular clouds in a spiral galaxy, leading to a burst of star formation in the clouds. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that the high gaseous (ram pressure and static thermal) pressure of the ICM strongly compresses a self-gravitating gas cloud within a short time scale (∼ 10 yr), dramatically increasing the central gas density, and consequently causing efficient star formation within the cloud. The stars developed in the cloud form a compact, gravitationally bound, star cluster. The star formation efficiency within such a cloud is found to depend on the temperature and the density of the ICM and the relative velocity of the galaxy with respect to it. Based on these results, we discuss the origin of starburst/poststarburst populations observed in distant clusters, the enhancement of star formation for galaxies in merging clusters, and the isolated compact HII regions recently discovered in the Virgo cluster. Starbursts in the Far - Ultraviolet

Starbursts are a significant component of the present-day universe, and offer unique laboratories for studying the processes that have regulated the formation and evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium. The combination of large aperture size, medium-to-high spectral resolution, and access to the feature-rich far-ultraviolet band make FUSE a uniquely valuable tool for studying starbu...

Mass Loss from Galaxies: Feeding the Igm, Recycling in the Igm

As a result of internal processes or environmental effects like ram-pressure stripping or collisions, galaxies lose a significant part of their stellar and gaseous content. Whereas the impact of such stripping on galaxy evolution has been well studied, much less attention has been given to the fate of the expelled material in the intergalactic or intracluster medium (IGM/ICM). Observational evi...

Obscuration of Active Galactic Nuclei by Circumnuclear Starbursts

We examine the possibility of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscuration by dusty gas clouds that spurt out from circumnuclear starburst regions. For the purpose, the dynamical evolution of gas clouds is pursued, including the effects of radiation forces by an AGN as well as a starburst. Here, we solve the radiative transfer equations for clouds, taking into consideration the growth of cloud...

Magnetic field evolution in galaxies interacting with the intracluster medium 3 D numerical simulations

A fully three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) model is applied to simulate the evolution of the large-scale magnetic field in cluster galaxies interacting with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). As the model input we use a time dependent gas velocity field resulting from 3D N-body sticky-particle simulations of a galaxy. The modeled clouds are affected by the ram pressure due to their...

Quantitative Estimates of Environmental Effects on the Star Formation Rate of Disk Galaxies in Clusters of Galaxies

A simple model is constructed to evaluate the change of star formation rate of a disk galaxy due to environmental e†ects in clusters of galaxies. Three e†ects are investigated : (1) tidal force from the potential well of the cluster, (2) increase of external pressure when the galaxy plows into the intracluster medium, and (3) high-speed encounters between galaxies. General analysis indicates th...
